How do I avoid fainting at the sight of needles?

I am interested in becoming an emergency physician but after volunteering in a local ER I fainted after watching a very large needle being inserted in to a mans knee. Also during several other occasions I felt the symptoms and quickly sat down before I fainted. I am fine with watching a person be cut open, but for some reason needles make me faint. Are there any tips for avoiding fainting besides removing my self from the situation?

The technical term for a fear of needles is belonephobia. Your best bet is to see a therapist who specializes in phobias. There are professional treatment methods that can get you over your fear. If you can control your reaction to what you see, you can avoid this fainting.

The particular type of fainting you’ve referred to is known as vasovagal syncope. Perhaps the most well-known trigger for this is the sight of blood. Check the reference listed below for more information. Here’s the thing though. You may be able to SEE someone doing this, but you may never be comfortable enough to actually insert a large needle in someone else’s body. If I were you, I would take this seriously into consideration when you’re choosing your career path.

There are some medications and other medical treatments that can help with this as well, and they are all listed in the link below. Talk to your doctor.
